Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Poland has received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees. As of March 14, their number reached 1.7 million people. They are mostly women and children. The recently adopted special law regulating the stay of Ukrainian refugees on the territory of Poland, according to the Polish Ombudsman, contains significant risks.
The Law provides financial incentives for Poles who provide their private premises (apartments, houses) to refugees – PLN 1,200 per person for 60 days. However, what will happen in 60 days?
The law does not provide refugees will be provided with accommodation after they stop living on premises provided by private individuals. The Poles hope that either in 2 months the war will end and the Ukrainians will return home, or Ukrainian refugees will receive tax numbers, access to the labor market, and will be solving their problems on their own.
Ukrainians who would like to independently rent a dwelling in Poland for 2 months face several problems. Firstly, the Poles are not willing to rent out housing for a short period. Usually, a rental agreement is concluded for a year, at least six months, but not for 2 months. At the same time, the owner of the apartment will ask the foreigner about having a permanent job.
Secondly, the price of housing in popular voivodship centers has increased significantly. In many cities, there is a shortage of budget housing, only very expensive apartments for at least 6,000 PLN per month remain.
Frankly speaking, Poland is already at the breaking point, and for Ukrainians who have decided to leave the country, at least for the duration of the war, we advise choosing other countries such as the Czech Republic and Germany. In Poland, humanitarian trains run constantly to Berlin, Munich, Prague, and other cities.
However, if a doctor is among the refugees, then they have a chance to quickly adapt and get a job in their specialty in Poland. We have already reported that it is possible to get a job in the hospitals with which the EUROMED Foundation cooperates without knowledge of the Polish language. The main thing is to have a specialty and work experience in this specialty for at least 3 years within the last 5 years. This opportunity is available only to citizens of Ukraine who crossed the border on February 24, 2022, and later.
For Ukrainian doctors who fled the war, Poland provides some new benefits that relate to documents submitted to the Ministry of Health for obtaining a medical license under a simplified procedure. In particular, it is possible to submit a diploma and its sworn translation without an apostille to the Ministry of Health. But in this case, it is necessary to provide a document confirming the border crossing after February 24th. The apostille will have to be provided after the end of the war.
We would like to remind you that the right to medical practice under the simplified procedure can be obtained by specialist physicians who have worked in their home country for at least 3 years in their specialty within the past 5 years and who speak Polish. If the doctor does not meet these requirements, then they can work in departments that specialize in the treatment of patients with COVID, in this case, a certificate of knowledge of the Polish language is not submitted to the Ministry of Health.
