EU to Supply Potassium Iodide to Ukraine while It Is Under a Nuclear Threat

The city of Enerhodar, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is located in, has been in a focus of both Ukrainian and European attention for several weeks. The Russian forces, having rolled up major gains in the city, are shelling blocks and the nuclear power plant facilities. The recent shelling has been reported near the nuclear reactor, resulting in the roof damage of the ZNPP special corpus filled with the nuclear fuel. In addition, the emergency sensors collapsed the fifth power unit of the Zaporizhzhia NPP after the Russian artillery attack and explosions causing the ZNPP backup electricity line disruption.

If the Moscow’s aggressor goes to extremes in his hostility, we may face a nuclear explosion, throwing “bad” iodine in the air. We may need a lot of Potassium iodide as a health protective measure.

On August 26, the Government of Ukraine addressed the European Union to procure a lot of potassium iodide as a health protective measure in case of explosion at the ZNPP. The Emergency Response Coordination Center quickly provided 5.5 million pills as EU civil aid for Ukraine, including 5 million from rescEU emergency stock and 500,000 from Austria with a total value of more than 500,000 euros. The Germany-based rescEU is the major supplier. “The pills intake implies prescribed dosage restrictions to protect thyroid from radioactive iodine”, said the EU officials.

Once again, in case of an explosion at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the radiation cloud will contaminate the south of Ukraine and the southwestern regions of Russia. If that happens, follow the instructions of the Government alerts when to take the pill of Potassium iodide. However, it may harm the health as a course of preventive medication.
