Humanitarian aid delivered to the Tokmak community in Zaporizhzhia region

Most of Zaporizhzhia region, up to 60%, is controlled by Russian troops. It is about 100 settlements with their local communities in. The soldiers destroy the infrastructure of cities and villages, the buildings, facilities and manufacture. Among those communities that needs help is Tokmak. People struggle without money, food, communications, medical care and all the necessary conveniences. At the same time, their lives are at risk every second.

Before the war, the population in Tokmak was 30 thousand people. The city was a logistic hub, due to its location at the crossroads of state and regional highways. There were several large steel plants there, and a railway station on the Luhansk – Tokmak – Melitopol – Simferopol route.

On March 2, after heavy battles with tanks, artillery and aircraft, the Russian troops sieged the city. The city representatives refused to enter into negotiations with the Russian military. The community were opposed to the siege by striking. Ihor Kotelevskyi who has been the mayor of Tokmak since 2009 was announced dead under obscure circumstances on May 7.

The people cannot leave the town as soldiers keep the checkpoints closed threatening shot to death those trying to escape. As well, they do not let humanitarian aid in Tokmak and other settlements.

Despite all, the volunteers of the YES Charitable Foundation persevered and delivered the humanitarian aid to the Tokmak’s community, procured by the Poland-based BENEFICIUM Foundation. The volunteers were staying near checkpoints in the steppe for several days, waiting for the opportunity to reach out and hand in the food, medicine, and hygiene items to those in need.
