“I set myself a goal of accelerating Ukraine’s victory by all means” SERGIY OSTROVSKIY, a volunteer.

A phone call on an early February morning in 2022 divided the life of Sergiy Ostrovskiy into ‘pre’ and ‘post’. ‘A full-scale military invasion has been launched in Ukraine’ the words of his friend working on Polish television disabled the mind for a moment which was long enough for him to visualize the shoots of war insanity he once saw in the movies followed by the faces of his family members and close friends living in Ukraine.

What to do? Sergiy was a fighter by nature, who used to have a grip on his life and the life of his family likewise. Responsible, educated, hardworking, and reflective, he quickly decided to do his best to help. A few minutes later he wrote a post on his Facebook page in the blue-and-yellow font, “Accommodation, food, transportation, medical care, and work for Ukrainian refugees”.

His wife Oksana, the soul-mate and ally was setting up the house to accommodate as many people as possible. She prepared warm clothes, and beds, packs of food, hygiene products, and other items for comforting items.

Sergiy’s mind was looking for solutions persistently. Meanwhile, the updates on the terror of the war in Ukraine were popping up in a shocking stream on TV and the Internet hourly showing artillery and airstrike, tank bombing by the Russian troops, demolished buildings, and dead or wounded people. ‘Blood. We need blood. Lots of blood’ it took Sergey a moment to be ready to donate his blood, second positive, and think of more donors. The young man was a sociable and friendly person. Having been living and working in Poland for more than six years, he built strong bonds with his numerous friends, while being respected by his colleagues. As soon as he suggested the initiative, they all donated blood to the Ukrainian people.

The following weeks turned into kilometers of roads to the Polish-Ukrainian border and back. Sergiy was picking up the refugees at the border checkpoint to bring them to Warsaw in his car or the one borrowed from a friend. They were Ukrainian women, children, and the aged. When there was no place in his house, Sergey arranged to share with Poles, who showed hospitality and compassion to the Ukrainian people. He was buying food, medicine, and whatever was needed for refugees for his own money or with the help of his friends.

On one of those days, Sergiy’s sister called from Dnipro asking for help not for herself but for a group of eighteen Ukrainian doctors returning from a scientific conference in Qatar. He should have picked them up in Warsaw and dropped them off in Lviv, assisting in crossing the border. The sister also asked to collect medicines for the wounded in Ukraine: bandages, antiseptics, antibiotics, and similar items.

It was a challenge that brought up the idea to provide help on a larger scale, which would allow for more effectiveness. Sergyi always believed in himself and the people who are kind-hearted. Seeking support from some organizations, he heard about EUROMED, the European Foundation for the Development of Medicine and Education, found the phone number of its director on the Internet, explained his concerns, and asked for help. We got the information about the delegates and their route confirmed, then we did our best to assist. We picked the doctors up, provided them with transportation and police support, and gave them the requested medicines to deliver in Lviv.

“I set a goal for myself to do my best to help my country, do everything possible and impossible to accelerate the victory of Ukraine” Sergiy answered the question about the reasons that encouraged him to volunteer. – “That was a takeaway from my childhood, from the parents. Mom and dad always taught me kindness, humanity, and compassion for other people’s grief, to be strong, and help those who are in trouble. Ukraine is in big trouble today, for sure”.

Today, Sergiy Ostrovskiy is the head of the «HELP UKRAINE!» project under the EUROMED Foundation. He has shared values with the Fund management, a persistent desire, and tremendous energy for volunteering. What drives him? He feels a part of such a large, beautiful, and courageous country like Ukraine. He has Ukrainian blood. Likewise, have his relatives experiencing invasion, and whose lives are at risk in Ukraine. They need help, which he is providing them by all means as the volunteer and the head of the «HELP UKRAINE!» project.

The whole world has been witnessing the brutality, bloodlust, and fanaticism of the Russian Federation for three months now. Ukraine is fighting for its right to exist and its national identity, for everlasting human values such as freedom, justice, and democracy. Ukrainians need help in this struggle. Owing to the efforts of patriotic volunteers, and the «HELP UKRAINE!» project, people from all over the world can provide all it takes to support Ukraine, and make charitable donations or provide sponsorship.

«HELP UKRAINE!» project receives requests for humanitarian support from Ukrainian organizations. It collects funds to allocate for humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, 95% of total spending is for the money of the Fund. Therefore, the project desperately needs support. Volunteers buy the necessary products, and medicines and send them to Ukraine.

Do the volunteers face any challenges? They do and plenty of them! As Sergiy Ostrovskiy points out, we have a lack of manufacturers reluctant to make changes to their production plan as well as the vehicles to hire for aid delivery to Ukraine. All the above goes together with the fuel supply disruptions, the old vehicle import excise tax abolition in Ukraine causing lines at the border. However, we are eliminating those challenges successfully. What important, is that we need funds to buy the necessary items and medicines. Meanwhile, new requests are coming every day, as people still need help.

The war is not over. Not giving up, no matter what, is very important. No to exhaustion! No to apathy! No to war! Each of us can do small well, and we are a powerful force when united to destroy evil.

The «HELP UKRAINE!» Project and its leader Sergiy Ostrovskiy express their sincere gratitude to everyone who joined us to support Ukraine and ask to continue their charitable assistance to the project. You can do this on the link https://t.me/euromedhelpsukraine
